Older parrots are usually neglected most of the times for reasons that are not their own. Many end up in homes whereby the caretakers have no knowledge on how to take care of them while others lose homes due to death of the caretaker. These end up sad in aviaries that are not something they are used to especially if they stayed with one owner for too long. Helping the bird get a home through adoption will give it a new lease on life and a second chance to enjoy a good home. This is what adopting is all about. These are mostly rescued birds. A lot of people assume that a rescued bird has behavioral problems. This is in fact rare. It is also wise to find out form the holders whether the bird has record of problems with its owners.

An older bird will come with the advantage of training. Some of the rescued birds come from very interesting setups where owners have invested in their training. Some birds will be able to do tricks and these will easily impress your friends. Older birds also have experience with living in homes and will be much easier to manage. This will save you the hustle of having to train your bird and give you the benefit of having fun with a well trained bird.

You will be surprised to learn that birds will live for very long. They will most often outlive their owners creating the rescuing need every so often. Some species of these parrots will live as long as 80 and more years. As you adopt and older parrot, you will need to come up with a long term plan in case you happen to be incapable of taking of the bird in the long run. You can do this by leaving the bird with a responsible younger person to take care of the bird thus give it longevity in terms of a good place to stay.

If you desire to adopt a talking parrot, you will be in luck if you get an older bird. These will most often have been trained to and learnt to. The older birds will easily have learnt this trick as opposed to the younger birds.

    Hello,

    I had a girlfriend that had an older African Grey. I ended up buying a cage for my place and after a while the bird came to accept me. It would sit on my shoulder and not want to get off, nibble on my ear, chill on the shower rod while I took a shower or bath, and hang out in the kitchen while I cooked. It liked to sit on the faucet with a little water dripping from it, or bob up and down when I listened to music (particularly rap, lol). I’m now in a new relationship, but wish I had an African Grey still. I’ve now come to know a new African Grey that’s being kept at my work place (which has people living at it 24/7). I’m working toward gaining its trust too. Anyway, I would be interested in adopting one of any age. I live in the Washington D.C. area. I do have 2 cats so perhaps an older one that is not fearful of other pets would be most suitable.

    Sunday morning I will be picking up my 1st African gray. He’s 4 years old and has not been handled in over a year. I was told he will bite me. I have patience and time…just not sure the best way to introduce him into my home. Just leve him alone for the first few days and let him get comfortable with his new surroundings ? I can get whatever I want, but the rule is, it needs to only have 10 or less years left. 🙁 I decided on an African grey, but I’m worried about one thing; what if the previous owners accidentally reinforced biting?
